Laying a concrete floor for a basement, depends on the floor you are starting with.

If laying straight onto a dirt floor

  • You will need to rake the floor first and remove any large debris or rocks and to ensure it is level (anything larger than a golf ball will need to be removed before any application)
  • Measure the surface area you intend to cover
  • Use our calculator as a guide to understand the quantity you will need
  • You will then need to lay a preliminary layer of sand (roughly between 4-5 inches deep). You will need to ensure the sand is applied evenly.

Top tip: offload the sand in small heaps all around the surface area and then use a rake to spread it evenly between the piles in order to save you time during the application.

If laying onto a gravel floor

  • This is a similar process as outlined above for a dirt floor, however a general even rake of the surface layer is required on a gravel substrate
  • You will then need to compact it down (called tamping)
  • Lay a wire mesh on top of the gravel layer to ensure the gravel is reinforced and to stop movement when the concrete is poured which would cause lumps.

Laying the concrete

It is recommended to use a quadrant laying method for indoor smaller areas like a basement. This is to avoid walking on wet concrete and allows you to work in sections around the room. There are many tutorials on how to set up the quadrants and processes for this online.

Once you have placed an order with us on an agreed date and time, you will then need to decide if you will wheelbarrow your concrete or hire a pump to lay this in your basement. A pump is usually preferred if laying the floor in one go, as concrete can dry really quickly, so you have a short window of time to move the concrete and lay it in place. If you are using a quadrant method, a wheelbarrow might be an option.

Once the concrete has been poured, you can use a tool called a Bull Float (a long mop shaped tool which has a flat head) to ensure a smooth finish to the concrete layer applied.

Our trucks will deliver your concrete on the specified date and time and will require room to park as close to the project location as possible. It is recommended to read our guidance on delivery if this is your first time ordering concrete with us, so you know what is involved in the process and access requirements.
